Golf Clubs or Golf Skills- What performs better?

I'm not going to be able to do these recordings outside too much longer now with fall coming and eventually winter. It's just kind of nice to be outside. Today, I'm at Coulee Golf Bowl in Onalaska, WI, and I just wanted to be here today because the greens are beautiful. It looks like they've just been mowed. It looks like they've just been sprinkled with water, and we're waiting for the sun to come out. Pretty soon the golfers will be teeing up right behind me. I am not a golfer, but I do have some golf clubs. It's actually been a couple years since I've taken a bucket of balls and gone out and just practiced. I am not the guy that you would want to be in your foursome on a golf course. I would be the individual who would bring humor to the game more than anything else.

The reason that I'm on the course this morning is I wanted to talk about clubs, and I wanted to talk about skills. Again, when it comes to golf, I have no skills. I probably have some very basic clubs. Let me use this example: when Tiger Woods was at his best, who do you think would have a better score at the end of 18 rounds if you played with the most expensive golf clubs money could buy against Tiger Woods playing with clubs that were purchased at Walmart or at a discount chain? If you were honest with yourself, you would say you know that it wouldn’t make any difference what Tiger used as far as his clubs. He would win because he had skills. You would lose, even if you had the best clubs in the world.

The reason I wanted to use the example of skill and clubs is when it comes to the life insurance asset it's important to have skills and know how to use the clubs. Whatever those clubs are, you need skill to be able to maximize the performance of your game. I remember when I first started to play golf, I took lessons because I had no idea what I was doing. I learned the proper stance. I learned how to properly hold my club. I learned how to properly swing using one hand and, then only using the other hand, and then bringing them together. I learned where I should be looking, and where I should be focused. Learning the skills takes time, and you need to have the right teacher.

The same goes with the life insurance asset. Many people believe that they can just pick up some clubs someplace; they can just buy a life insurance policy anywhere. Then, they think they’re all set and ready to go, but unfortunately there is skill that comes into play. A lot of people are surprised to learn that the IRS actually has a tax code that talks about life insurance assets, section 77.02. They don't realize that there are multiple different kinds of “clubs” in a life insurance portfolio. If you are “putting”, there are special clubs for that in a life insurance portfolio. If you are “driving”, it also depends upon what you want to accomplish, but there are special clubs for that in your life insurance portfolio. It's difficult to just go online and try to figure it out on your own. That's why, for example, unless I used a skilled teacher, someone who would show me how to play golf, I was always going to fail at it because I was not the professional with the skills in golf.

Maybe that's really what we need to talk about today. You need a professional to assist you in learning the skills and helping walk you through the golf course, the life insurance golf course of life. That's one of the things that we have done expertly for the last 35 years. That's the reason why I wrote my book Investments Don't Hug: Embracing the Life Insurance Asset. Now, it's important that we have different investments like: IRAs, 401ks, mutual funds, stocks and bonds, annuities, real estate, money market accounts CDs, and all those different investment parts of our portfolio. They all come into play, but what the life insurance asset can do is to make all those assets you have perform even better. Isn’t that what you would want, especially during times of turmoil like we have right now? the market seems to go from one extreme to another on a day-to-day basis. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to walk the golf course of life and to know that you got a handle on how the game is going to end?
